R.A.C.E. Issues
Despite what some people may have said or what you may have read in the local paper RACE is not defunct we continue to try to make a difference and make Broken Hill a safer environment to live in.
A few of the residents who live locally have been talking to us, and we have been talking to the EPA. But it seems we still have more questions than answers. Here are some of the concerns raised.
1. What happened to the report that we were promised into the water leak which came from CBH property at the back of Eyre lane and ran all the way to Paton Street?
2. Why have CBH offered to help clean up the mess from the water leak near the quarry {mining companies are not in the habit of cleaning up other peoples mess} if it didn’t come from CBH’s property to begin with?
3. Why did this leak appear to stop about the time CBH finished their bunding work around their own dam?
4. As we have asked before where in CBH’s approval is the haul road , that runs adjacent to Eyre street mentioned?
5. Why were vehicles racing up and down this haul road after 9pm?
6. Were tests carried out on the dirt that CBH were hauling, in both directions on this haul road? If so where are the results?
7. Where is the report into the thick grey sludge that CBH allowed their contractors to deposit along Holten Drive some 3 months ago?
8. Why have CBH not liased with the community as stated in their approval, or made statements in the local paper about their activities. It seems that the only time they want to say anything is when they want to bragg about how many people they are hiring?
9. Why is is this mining company allowed to operate without having a boundy fence that clearly defines their property from others?
All this and they still haven’t begun production. If allowed to continue in this manner, this company has the potential to contaminate, not only nearby residents, but the whole Broken Hill area
We have spoken to Brendan Barker at CBH and he told us that they have organised to have Golders Associates test the area including ground water sampling and also how the water flows. We asked if we could have a copy of the results of the study but Brendan’s answer to that was I don’t know about that. An answer we get a lot from Brendan.
