CBH & Lead Dust
Lead dust testing in the area is a major concern to us and we don't think that the mine doing its own testing is appropriate. We believe that the council should be demanding that independent testing be carried out on a regular basis to ensure lead as well as other contaminants in the environment do not return to the high levels experienced in the area in past years. These results should also be made public.
We have been told that council paid $ 1.3 Million towards the remediation work that was carried out on many houses near the line of load. The General Manager was asked if this was true at the council meeting on Tuesday 19th of January 2010, but neglected to address the question. The mines need to be responsible for the damage that they do to the environment. It is a slap in the face that not only does we suffer the ill effects of lead and the many other heavy metal contaminants that the mines produce but we are then expected as Rate and Taxpayers to foot the bill to clean up their mess. After all Billions of $s have been taken from Broken Hill over the years some of that money should be put back into the community to make it a safer environment for our kids.
An open Cut mine at RASP would be disasterous for the community.
There are several ways in which the mine can carry out its operations that would minimize the impact on the environment. If the mine was serious about protecting the environment and the community as they say they would make the following changes to their proposal. These changes would cut down the lead and heavy metal contamination considerably.
-
The crusher should be put at the bottom of the pit so that the town has the maximum possible shielding from the contaminants.
-
Residue should be pumped out of town, as Perilya do rather than having ponds on the lease that will dry out and blow poisons all over town.
-
The ore should be trucked internally to minimize the contamination and traffic in Eyre St
-
The mine should be responsible to pay for independent lead testing and the results should be made public.
-
The mine should be made to set aside money for any clean up or remediation work that may be needed to be done in the future.
-
The mine should plant trees and other screening plants all the way around the boundary of the mine to further screen residents on the apron from the contamination.
-
Mt Hebbard should be vegetated to hold down the dust Mustard bush would be ideal for this purpose.
-
Are you Aware that this is only the first stage in a series of 3 stages that will be proposed by the mine?
